Preventing Child Marriage

Child marriage remains a deeply entrenched issue in Nepal where the practice not only deprives girls of their childhood but also poses significant risks to their health, education, and future opportunities. The Nepal Muslim Women Welfare Society (NMWWS) has been at the forefront of efforts to combat this issue, particularly within the Muslim community. Through targeted initiatives, NMWWS seeks to empower women and girls, challenge harmful cultural practices, and protect the fundamental rights of young girls at risk of early marriage.
In 2015, NMWWS launched a comprehensive project aimed at preventing child marriage and advocating for the rights of marginalized Muslim girls. This initiative was rooted in the belief that every girl deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and reach her full potential, free from the constraints of early marriage.

By raising awareness, building capacity, and engaging key community stakeholders, NMWWS has made significant strides in shifting perceptions and practices around child marriage, helping to pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for girls.

Raising Awareness and Building Capacity

NMWWS worked diligently to educate women’s groups about their rights, gender equality, and the severe consequences of early marriage. By equipping these groups with leadership skills and knowledge, the project empowered them to raise their voices against this violation of human rights. Women became advocates within their communities, standing up against practices that have long oppressed them and their daughters.

Engaging Religious and Community Leaders

Recognizing the influential role of religious and community leaders, NMWWS engaged these figures in the fight against child marriage. By involving leaders who hold sway over community norms and values, the project aimed to challenge and change the cultural acceptance of child marriage.

Community-Level Awareness Campaigns

To ensure widespread impact, NMWWS conducted community-level awareness campaigns that directly engaged local populations. These campaigns highlighted the dangers and illegality of child marriage, emphasizing the importance of protecting girls’ rights and ensuring their access to education and opportunities for a better future.

The fight against child and early marriage is critical in safeguarding the rights of marginalized girls and ensuring their future well-being. The 2015 project by NMWWS made significant strides in preventing child marriage within the Muslim community by empowering women, engaging influential leaders, and raising awareness at the grassroots level. Through continued efforts like these, communities can work together to eliminate child marriage and create a more just and equitable society for all.
